In the United States, and other parts of the world, most people live their whole lives without ever considering the impact that the products we purchase or food we eat have on the planet at large. We go to the shops and we buy what we need under the naive presumption that the corporations and government will conduct business with morality in mind. But the truth is far more disturbing than most would ever want to know.
People carelessly enjoy the consumption of meat emotionally detached not only from the suffering that the animal had to undergo, but also that eating meat literally contributes to 80 percent of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest, which you can read more about here). Or how purchasing palm oil which can be found in countless products, from cereals, to peanut butter, to shampoo, literally contributes to the extinction of the orangutan in Indonesia. We don't realize that the corporations and government are corrupt as hell, so we have to seriously research what we are eating and buying in an effort to not support unethical corporations and brutal practices.
Approximately 137 species of plants, animals, and insects go extinct every day due to deforestation. Averaging 50,000 species a year!
The disturbing truth is that our ignorant actions are resulting in the deforestation of the world’s natural habitat, which ultimately means that the animals who live there are being left for dead. Imaging someone destroyed your home, cut off your water supply and your food? That would be a crime against humanity, but because they are "animals", we don't look at it that way.
It might seem extreme because we think this insanity that we are living in is "normal", but that's the way the truth can be, it doesn't care if you agree with it or not, it's still the truth.
To illustrate this reality, Sanctuary India created an excellent ad campaign to being this epidemic to the forefront;
We have to start becoming more conscious about our purchasing power and make a commitment to supporting companies which do business ethically and boycotting those who don't.
