By now you have probably noticed photos of men with just one single painted fingernail and thought to yourself this must be just another stupid trend. But there is actually a much deeper important meaning behind it.
First off, the trend is only for men, at least as of now, and was started in Australia and has since made its way to the United States. The color of the paint and the choice of nail is of no consequence or importance, the meaning remains the same.
The movement began when Elliot Costello (pictured above), met a little girl by the name of Thea, while traveling around the world to help poverty stricken areas with Hagar International.
While in Cambodia the little girl and Elliot became friends. Little Thea loved painting her nails and while they spoke about some of her struggles in life, she was painting one of Elliot's nails. It was then that he found out about her being sexually abused. He promised her that he would keep that nail painted always to remember her.
This sad but profound experience inspired Elliot to come up with The Polished Man Project. The idea behind it, is to raise awareness about the epidemic of child sex abuse that victimizes 1 out of every 5 girls, and 1 out of every 20 boys.
